Sopra n°2 clearly inaugurates a new era for the “Premium High End” by taking into account new performance criteria. Compact, modern, a pure design, character... all these are essential factors to ensure perfect integration into your interior.

Equipped with best midrange drivers ever developed by Focal, with the NIC and TMD technologies, Sopra n°2 pushes back the limits of sound reproduction in terms of transparency in a very compact enclosure. Indeed, unlike Utopia, which is extravagant by essence and where size is by no means a constraint, Sopra aims for maximal compactness to ensure easy integration into reasonably sized rooms. Sopra n°2 is perfectly at ease in rooms measuring up to 320ft2 (30m2), and is even ideal for larger rooms measuring up to 750ft2 (70m2).

Since the beginning, we have always had a great interest in the magnetic circuit, an essential aspect of a speaker drive unit. The precision and detail of audio reproduction depend on the stability of the magnetic field. NIC technology (Neutral Inductance Circuit) permits to control the magnetic field and finally enables to master it in order to limit distortion. It decreases the effects of distortion and gives the sound a very high-definition and an unprecedented dynamic.

TUNED MASS DAMPER

Focal's teams have revealed resonances which alter definition in the suspension connecting the cone to the basket. Previous solutions for increasing the dampening properties of the suspension all resulted in an increase of the mass, consequently altering the definition. The answer came from a technology used in earthquake-resistant skyscrapers, which is also used for the suspension of racing cars. "TMD" technology consists of optimizing the suspension profile which controls the resonance in order to drastically reduce distortion and increase the definition of bass and midrange.

INFINITE HORN LOADING

Focal's Beryllium tweeter features an incredibly light and extremely rigid dome, that deliver a transparent and dynamic sound. Its main limitation comes from the compression of air in the cavity behind it. But the requirement for Sopra to be compact meant that as much of the cabinet as possible had to be used for the bass. We had to explore other options for loading the tweeter, which led us to come up with the IHL system. The "IHL" system enables to load the Beryllium tweeter respecting the compactness demand of the speaker. The rear wave of the tweeter is delicately and gradually absorbed to avoid any distortion. The treble definition is pushed to the maximum.

NO SACRIFICE OF PERFORMANCE TO AESTHETICS

The design agency, Pineau & Le Porcher, designed Sopra with one rule: no sacrifice of performance to aesthetics. The Sopra line is destined for the most passionate sound enthusiasts. Its design favors performance, whilst bringing together the qualities expected of an object which will be integrated into very elegant interiors and décors. Lacquered or bloodwood finishes are combined with noble materials to create an elegant line. Substantial efforts were made to give the front a tidy appearance, particularly around the speaker drivers, to iron out any aspects which could afflict the acoustics or the appearance. Sopra’s very structure is articulated around the intermediate section. This injected polyurethane component allows for the upper and lower cabinets to be inclined for the "Focus Time" (acoustic convergence of the channels).

MASTERING THE CABINET AND CHOICE OF MATERIALS

Made in France Sopra’s cabinet was designed in Focal's cabinet-making facility in Bourbon-Lancy (Burgundy, France) using the same manufacturing process as for Utopia The 69mm sandwich-machined front panel uses the same principle as ‘Gamma Structure’ to provide inertia and damping. Its density gives it the inertia necessary to provide a stable mechanical reference for optimal definition. The inside of the cabinet has no parallel side panels, and small Helmholtz resonators have been added to the lower section to prevent vertical standing waves. Focal chose glass as the material for the base of the loudspeaker to provide floor coupling, using spikes, which enabled the fastest propagation time possible, thus eliminating all halo effects in the bass.

The main theme of Sopra is deliberately uncluttered, though it still offers connoisseurs the opportunity to enjoy all the small details. The grille with an incremental meshing motif protects the Beryllium tweeter and gives it a strong identity. This motif is repeated for sealing the curved back panel of the middle section.

Von Anfang an hatten wir großes Interesse am magnetischen Kreis, einem wesentlichen Aspekt einer Lautsprecher-Antriebseinheit. Die Präzision und Detailtreue der Audiowiedergabe hängen von der Stabilität des Magnetfelds ab. Die NIC-Technologie (Neutral Inductance Circuit) ermöglicht die Steuerung des Magnetfelds und schließlich dessen Beherrschung, um Verzerrungen zu begrenzen. Es verringert die Auswirkungen von Verzerrungen und verleiht dem Klang eine sehr hohe Auflösung und eine beispiellose Dynamik.

ABGESTIMMTER MASSENDÄMPFER

Die Teams von Focal haben Resonanzen entdeckt, die die Definition in der Aufhängung verändern, die den Kegel mit dem Korb verbindet. Bisherige Lösungen zur Erhöhung der Dämpfungseigenschaften der Aufhängung führten alle zu einer Erhöhung der Masse und damit zu einer Änderung der Definition. Die Antwort kam von einer Technologie, die in erdbebensicheren Wolkenkratzern zum Einsatz kommt und auch für die Aufhängung von Rennwagen verwendet wird. Die „TMD“-Technologie besteht in der Optimierung des Aufhängungsprofils, das die Resonanz steuert, um Verzerrungen drastisch zu reduzieren und die Definition von Bässen und Mitteltönen zu verbessern.

UNENDLICHE HORNBELADUNG

Der Beryllium-Hochtöner von Focal verfügt über eine unglaublich leichte und extrem steife Kalotte, die einen transparenten und dynamischen Klang liefert. Die größte Einschränkung ergibt sich aus der Luftkompression im dahinter liegenden Hohlraum. Die Anforderung an Sopra, kompakt zu sein, bedeutete jedoch, dass so viel Gehäuse wie möglich für den Bass genutzt werden musste. Wir mussten nach anderen Optionen für die Beladung des Hochtöners suchen, was uns zur Entwicklung des IHL-Systems führte. Das „IHL“-System ermöglicht die Beladung des Beryllium-Hochtöners unter Berücksichtigung der Kompaktheitsanforderungen des Lautsprechers. Die hintere Welle des Hochtöners wird sanft und allmählich absorbiert, um jegliche Verzerrung zu vermeiden. Die Höhendefinition wird auf das Maximum gebracht.

Die Designagentur Pineau & Le Porcher hat Sopra nach einer Regel entworfen: Keine Abstriche bei der Leistung zugunsten der Ästhetik. Die Sopra-Linie richtet sich an die leidenschaftlichsten Klangliebhaber. Sein Design ist leistungsorientiert und vereint gleichzeitig die Qualitäten, die von einem Objekt erwartet werden, das in sehr elegante Innenräume und Dekore integriert werden kann. Lackierte oder Bloodwood-Oberflächen werden mit edlen Materialien kombiniert, um eine elegante Linie zu schaffen. Es wurden erhebliche Anstrengungen unternommen, um der Vorderseite ein aufgeräumtes Erscheinungsbild zu verleihen, insbesondere im Bereich der Lautsprechertreiber, um alle Aspekte auszubügeln, die die Akustik oder das Erscheinungsbild beeinträchtigen könnten. Die eigentliche Struktur von Sopra ist um den Zwischenteil herum gegliedert. Diese eingespritzte Polyurethan-Komponente ermöglicht die Neigung des Ober- und Untergehäuses für die „Focus Time“ (akustische Konvergenz der Kanäle).

EINZELHEITEN

Das Hauptthema von „Sopra“ ist bewusst schlicht gehalten, bietet dem Kenner aber dennoch die Möglichkeit, alle kleinen Details zu genießen. Das Gitter mit einem inkrementellen Maschenmuster schützt den Beryllium-Hochtöner und verleiht ihm eine starke Identität. Dieses Motiv wird für die Versiegelung der gewölbten Rückwand des Mittelteils wiederholt.

Estabilizando el campo magnético

Desde el principio, siempre hemos tenido un gran interés en el circuito magnético, un aspecto esencial de una unidad de accionamiento de altavoz. La precisión y el detalle de la reproducción de audio dependen de la estabilidad del campo magnético. La tecnología NIC (Circuito de Inductancia Neutra) permite controlar el campo magnético y finalmente dominarlo para limitar la distorsión. Disminuye los efectos de distorsión y le da al sonido una definición muy alta y una dinámica sin precedentes.

AMORTIGUADOR DE MASA SINTONIZADO

Los equipos de Focal han descubierto resonancias que alteran la definición en la suspensión que conecta el cono con la canasta. Las soluciones anteriores para aumentar las propiedades amortiguadoras de la suspensión dieron como resultado un aumento de la masa, alterando en consecuencia la definición. La respuesta provino de una tecnología utilizada en rascacielos resistentes a terremotos, que también se utiliza para la suspensión de autos de carreras. La tecnología "TMD" consiste en optimizar el perfil de suspensión que controla la resonancia para reducir drásticamente la distorsión y aumentar la definición de graves y medios.

El tweeter de berilio de Focal presenta una cúpula increíblemente ligera y extremadamente rígida, que ofrece un sonido transparente y dinámico. Su principal limitación proviene de la compresión del aire en la cavidad situada detrás. Pero el requisito de que Sopra fuera compacto significaba que había que utilizar la mayor parte posible del gabinete para el bajo. Tuvimos que explorar otras opciones para cargar el tweeter, lo que nos llevó a idear el sistema DIH. El sistema "IHL" permite cargar el tweeter de berilio respetando las exigencias de compacidad del altavoz. La onda trasera del tweeter se absorbe de forma delicada y gradual para evitar cualquier distorsión. La definición de agudos se lleva al máximo.

La agencia de diseño Pineau & Le Porcher diseñó Sopra con una regla: no sacrificar el rendimiento por la estética. La línea Sopra está destinada a los entusiastas del sonido más apasionados. Su diseño favorece las prestaciones, al tiempo que reúne las cualidades que se esperan de un objeto que se integrará en interiores y decoraciones muy elegantes. Los acabados lacados o sanguinolentos se combinan con materiales nobles para crear una línea elegante. Se hicieron esfuerzos sustanciales para darle al frente una apariencia ordenada, particularmente alrededor de los controladores de los altavoces, para eliminar cualquier aspecto que pudiera afectar la acústica o la apariencia. La estructura misma de Sopra se articula alrededor de la sección intermedia.
